Movado debuted its long-awaited Connect smartwatch on its website this week. And in the tradition of high-end smartwatches ventured by luxury watch and fashion firms—notably Tag Heuer and more recently, Louis Vuitton—the device is solidly conceived and fabricated, runs on the Android system, and costs an arm and a leg.
The Movado Connect comes in five styles ranging from $595 to $995. It’s steep pricing for a watch that promises to have a limited shelf life and needs to be connected to a power source every evening for at least two hours (in a world of long-lasting batteries, I can’t imagine why the brand wouldn’t strive to do better on this front).
But users will no doubt enjoy the handsome watch while it’s current. The device features NFC capabilities for its embedded Android Pay app, a boatload of sensors that interact with finely calibrated functions, and five customizable watch faces inspired by Movado’s iconic museum dial design.
This $995 Movado Connect style includes several sensors, among them an accelerometer, a gyroscope, an ambient light sensor, and NFC payment capabilities.
Tech website Wareable noted that this isn’t actually Movado’s first smartwatch. The brand partnered with HP for a smart analog watch called the Movado Bold Motion in 2015.
Movado owns the smart tech licenses on a handful of other well-known brands, including Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss—both of which plan to debut smartwatches this fall.
