Permit me a moment to be just a bit grinchy, as there is currently a trending fashion that I can’t seem to digest: ruffles. Sure, there are many women who can pull them off beautifully—and that, I admire greatly (I promise I’m not judging if you love ruffles). But me? I end up feeling (and probably looking) like Little Bo Peep got her hands on the puffy shirt from Seinfeld. I suppose it all comes down to the fact that I don’t gravitate towards styles that feel, to me, overtly sweet (don’t get me wrong, I love girly things, but have limits).
And yet, on the hunt for a new summer wardrobe, ruffles are everywhere (look at this feature from Intermix, for example). I find a few things I like and—wouldn’t ya know it—some part of it is ruffled.
So what’s a girl to do? Break her no-ruffle rule and sacrifice her fashion principles for one potentially great outfit? I mean…yeah, probably.
But if that’s the case, jewelry is vital: I’d counteract the trend’s voluminous layers with sleek, straight lines—some with pointed edges or sharp angles, others softer, but still anchoring the foofy frills. Or, if you would prefer to inject a more masculine element, seek bold, chunky jewels—but be careful not to go too big, or you run the risk of having too much look. If your customers are anything like me (is it a possibility that I’m not that weird?) you’ll want to offer these to them, too—actually, even if they’re not like me, you’ll still want to get in on this. Who could resist?
