HUGH GLENN RECEIVES HUMANITARIAN AWARD
Hugh Glenn, president of Cyma Watch/Glenn Corp., New York, N.Y., received the National Humanitarian Award from the Jewelry Division of the National Conference in New York City Nov. 30.
Sanford Cloud Jr., president of the National Conference, was guest speaker. Joseph Thompson, editor in chief and publishing director of Modern Jeweler magazine, Overland Park, Kans., presented the award. James J. Lazarus, president of L&R Manufacturing, Kearny, N.J., was chairman of the event.
The National Conference, founded in 1927 as the National Conference of Christians and Jews, is a human- relations organization dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry and racism in America. The organization promotes understanding and respect among all races, religions and cultures through advocacy, conflict resolution and education.
AGTA SELECTS NEW LIFE MEMBER
The American Gem Trade Association honored journalist David Federman as 1995 AGTA Honorary Lifetime Member during a dinner-dance Feb. 4 in Tucson, Ariz.
Federman, the first journalist to receive the award, was honored for distinguished service to the colored gemstone industry. He is executive editor of Modern Jeweler magazine and has written at length about gems. His Jeweler’s Gemstone Reference served as prototype for the Gemstone Enhancement Manual developed by AGTA and other industry organizations. He, Patti Geolat and C. Van Northrup published The Professional’s Guide to Jewelry Insurance Appraising. And his work has appeared in Barron’s, Philadelphia magazine and in publications for gem connoisseurs and collectors.
In recognition of his work, he has received 13 Neal awards and four certificates of merit from the American Business Press – the highest writing honors given to trade journalists.
WAR CRIMES PROSECUTOR SPEAKS AT ORT MEETING
Justice Richard Goldstone, chief prosecutor of the United Nations Tribunal on War Crimes in the former Yugoslavia and in Rwanda, was the keynote speaker at the American ORT National Conference, held Jan. 26-29 at the Sheraton New York.
Goldstone, who’s also vice chairman of the World ORT Union Executive Committee and justice of the South African Constitutional Court, spoke to more than 400 delegates at the conference. Representing the Jewelry Industry Chapter at the conference were Phyllis Bergman of Mercury Ring Corp.; Jose Hess of Jose Hess Inc., chapter president; and Stanley Schechter of Honora Jewelry Co., chapter chairman.
American ORT President Murray Koppelman of New York concluded his four-year term of office and Paul Borman was elected president.
Also at the conference, delegates heard reports from directors of ORT programs in Israel, Europe, the U.S. and the Third World; participated in seminars and workshops on solicitation, missions and planned giving; and learned how ORT’s computerized training systems are used worldwide. ORT schools and programs provide vocational/technical training in Israel and 50 other countries.
APPOINTMENTS
Gabi Tolkowsky was appointed chairman of Diatrada NV, Antwerp, Belgium. He founded Diatrada, which specializes in diamond flower cuts and fancy shapes, in 1974.
John Campbell was promoted to assistant vice president of merchandising at Sterling Inc. of Fairlawn, Ohio. Pattie Light was promoted from director of special projects to assistant vice president of corporate communications, Danny Migliardi was promoted from director of the diamond department to assistant vice president of the international diamond department and Pat Gorey was promoted from manager of merchandise planning to director of planning, analysis and control. Also at Sterling, Joy Ehmann was named assistant vice president of merchandise planning, analysis and control. She previously worked in a similar position for Hills Department Stores. Harry Shapiro joined the company as creative director of advertising. He was formerly creative project manager for the women’s division at J.C. Penney Co.
Wayne R. Michaels was appointed regional sales manager for Texas, Oklahoma and parts of New Mexico at Allison-Kaufman Co., Van Nuys, Cal.
Susan D. Ravenscroft was named regional representative and Paul M. Ingersoll was appointed consultant for Christie’s branch in Philadelphia, Pa.
Jack Immendorf was named chief executive officer and Jay Howell chief financial officer of Golden ADA, San Francisco, Cal. Immendorf replaces Peter Michaels, who left the company. Golden ADA was founded in 1993 by two Armenian brothers and a Russian national to polish and market Russian diamonds.
Wayne Ackerson was appointed key account manager for the U.S. at Royal Crystal Rock, New York, N.Y. He was formerly marketing services manager for Imperial Schrade Corp.
Alan Rose was named director of architectural operations at Arthur Lasky Architects, New York, N.Y. The company specializes in jewelry manufacturing renovation, relocation and new facilities design.
Finlay Enterprises of New York, N.Y., named Arthur Reiner chairman and chief executive of its Finlay Fine Jewelry division. The division operates more than 450 leased jewelry departments throughout the U.S. Reiner, formerly chairman and chief executive of R.H. Macy & Co., East Division, succeeds Ronald B. Grudberg, who left the company.
Gregory E. Sherman, CG, was appointed general manager at Fidelity Diamond Importers, Paramus, N.J. He also was named director of insurance and appraisal services.
William G. Smith was named store manager of Watches, a new watch store in Columbus, Ohio.
Robert J. Stevens was named vice president of sales at GP Systems Inc., Austin, Tex., a software developer for advertising. He previously worked for Seiko Corp. of America as general manager of advertising and public relations.
Charles Weeks was appointed sales representative for the Pennsylvania area by Reed & Barton, Silversmiths, Taunton, Mass. He was formerly a financial consultant for Merrill Lynch.
Evan Wells was named vice president of Remember When…, Dayton, Ohio, a manufacturer of promotional fashion jewelry.
RETIREMENT
Bill W. Rhodes retired Dec. 15. He was a salesman for southern California, Arizona, New Mexico and parts of Texas for Allison-Kaufman Co., Van Nuys, Cal.
FINGERHUT EXEC DIES
Arthur Kapplow Jr., senior vice president of Fingerhut Cos., Minnetonka, Minn., died Dec. 27 at his home, apparently of a heart attack. He was 47.
Kapplow joined Fingerhut in 1992 as head of the jewelry division and was promoted in March 1994 to senior vice president responsible for all merchandising. Previously, he held management positions in retail and catalog jewelry with J.C. Penney Co.
He is survived by his wife, Stephanie; two sons, Arthur III and Jonathan; a daughter, Elizabeth; two sisters and a brother.

Ches Barrett, 80, of Yukon, Mo., died Dec. 29 of heart failure. He was a jeweler and watchmaker.
Mildred Pittman Bingham, 83, of Natalbany, La., died Dec. 26 of heart failure. She was the former owner of Bingham’s Jewelry.
S. Steven Brody, 75, of New York, N.Y., died Dec. 23 of pneumonia. He was the cofounder and former president of Cadoro Jewels Corp., a costume-jewelry manufacturing company in New York, N.Y.
Jeweler Richard O. Emmert, 66, of Phoenix, Ariz., died Dec. 28.
Henry S. Oken, 59, of Cranston, R. I., died Dec. 9. He was cofounder and executive vice president of Gem Case Inc., a division of Weingeroff Enterprises. He was also a member of the Providence Jewelers Association and the Wycliffe and Metacomet Country Club and was a Navy veteran.
Charlie Norris Reed, 78, of Columbus, Miss., died Dec. 28 of Alzheimer’s disease. He was a retired manager of Dreifus Jewelry Co.
