LITTMAN AND BARCLAY ANNOUNCE PRESIDENT

Joel Sneider was named president and chief executive officer of the Littman and Barclay Jewelry stores, owned by Elangy Corp., Edison, N.J. The company has 128 stores along the East Coast.

Sneider came to Elangy after 20 years with Macy’s, most recently as president of women’s sportswear. He previously was a buyer, store manager, senior vice president of sales promotion and senior vice president/director of stores at Macy’s. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin and the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania.

Littman Jewelers, established in 1885, is headed by Cochairmen Leonard and Herbert Littman. “The opportunity to be involved in an entrepreneurial environment is very exciting,” says Sneider. “Littman stores have a quality environment and top-notch associates. I look forward to working with Len, Herb and the entire Littman team to bring added value to this enterprise.”

NYSJA SELECTS SALESMAN OF YEAR

The New York State Jewelers Association named Robert Torcivia Salesman of the Year. Torcivia is a territory manager for Wittnauer International.

“I’m delighted, but not surprised,” says Robert Mazzone, senior vice president of sales for Wittnauer. “Bob has developed customer loyalty through the simple expedient of hard work, intelligent application and follow-through.”

HAMMERMAN TO HONOR 50-YEAR EMPLOYEE

Hammerman Bros., a New York City jewelry manufacturer, will honor an employee for 50 years of service at the 51-year-old company. Mel Garland started with the company as a jeweler in August 1945 and has been foreman of the factory for the past 30 years.

Bernard and Ben Hammerman, founders of the company with their late brother, Hyman, will honor Garland at a company banquet in August. Garland is one of 10 employees who have been with the company for more than 25 years.

GOLDSMITHS GUILD NAMES ASSOCIATE

Harold C. Howland Jr., a sales and marketing associate with Pease & Curren Inc., Warwick, R.I., was elected an Associate of the Wardens and Commonalty of the Mystery of Goldsmiths of the City of London. The award recognizes his assistance to the group and his contributions to the gold, silver and jewelry industries.

Howland was associated with the Manufacturing Jewelers and Silversmiths of America for 20 years; has lobbied for the industry in Washington, D.C.; and managed a jewelry school (The Jewelry Institute) and a jewelry shipping company (the Jewelers Shipping Association). Howland’s relationship with the Worshipful Company spans more than two decades and includes offering seminars on precious metal casting techniques and metallurgy.

The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, which received its first royal charter in 1327, supports the gold- and silversmithing crafts, operates an assaying and hallmarking office and maintains a collection of English silver from the past 500 years. It has 25 associates, 10 from the U.S.

U.S. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HONORS HOUSTON JEWELERS

James and Linda Mills, owners of Pineforest Jewelry Inc., Houston, Tex., recently received a Blue Chip Enterprise Initiative award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The award is presented to small businesses which succeed in attaining the “American Dream.” It is underwritten by the Chamber of Commerce, Connecticut Mutual Insurance Co. and Nation’s Business magazine.

Pineforest Jewelry, a manufacturing/retailing business, started with a $10,000 investment and has grown from $100,000 in annual sales and two employees to $750,000 in annual sales and 14 employees.

APPOINTMENTS

Terry Buckham was named manager of the King’s Jewelry store in the Cranberry Mall, Cranberry Township, Pa. Buckham was formerly manager of the company’s store in the Greengate Mall, Greensburg, Pa.

Jim Doyle joined the management information system department at Hoover & Strong, Richmond, Va. He is a programmer/analyst working in production and inventory management systems.

Joan Elledge was appointed director of FRED Joaillier’s salon in Beverly Hills, Cal.

Gary Simon was named vice president of sales and marketing for Luger Swiss, the new division of CSC Time Corp., the Rockville, N.Y.-based distributor and manufacturer of Luger Swiss and Perry Ellis watches.

Peter G. Erickson was appointed senior vice president of national accounts at Shube’s Manufacturing, Albuquerque, N.M.

Michael Feely was appointed president and chief executive officer of APWM Inc., which distributes Roven Dino watches in the U.S. Donald Williams was named national sales manager of Roven Dino watches. The company also named the following sales representatives: Alan Hatoff for New Jersey and Pennsylvania; Sherry Sterman for Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia; Anthony DeBano for California and Arizona; and Charles Fisher for Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Julia Anne Farrell was named president of Omar Torres Inc., New York, N.Y. She was formerly president and chief executive officer of Guerlain Inc. Also at Omar Torres, Sherif Hussein was appointed director of sales for the Midwest.

Anthony D. LaChapelle was promoted to senior vice president of sales and marketing, and Alan Buff was promoted to director of sales and marketing at Reed & Barton, Taunton, Mass. David McLoughlin was appointed president of Eureka Manufacturing Co., a division of Reed & Barton.

Guido Giovannini-Torelli was appointed to the board of directors of the Gemological Institute of America’s European Alumni Association. He is the president of Tryon Mercantile Inc. and editor of Diamond Insight, a monthly newsletter that covers the diamond and jewelry industries worldwide. Based in New York City, Giovannini-Torelli will act as liaison between European and U.S. members.

Sam Patel was promoted to sales manager of the Mayor’s Jewelers store in the Gardens Mall, Palm Beach, Fla. He was formerly assistant manager of the company’s Boca Town Center store.

Morgan Hare was promoted to vice president of QDirect, the direct-marketing division of QVC Network, West Chester, Pa. Hare was formerly the company’s director of merchandising for beauty and cosmetics.

Gary S. Hunt was named director of leasing for The Giftcenter & Jewelrymart, San Francisco, Cal. He was formerly director of leasing for the Fashion Center, San Francisco.

Greg I. Shaw was appointed national sales manager at Diamond & Jewelry Syndicate Corp., New York, N.Y.

Judith Shevlin was appointed customer service director at Ardian Corp., New York, N.Y. She was formerly with Peter Brams Ltd., New York, N.Y.

Richard Testa was named director of information technology at the Gemological Institute of America, Santa Monica, Cal. He was previously vice president of information systems at an executive search company.

Cynthia Cohen Turk was named to the board of advisers of Gordon Brothers, Boston, Mass. Turk is the founder and president of Marketplace 2000, a marketing and strategic consulting firm.

Hal Wilensky was appointed executive vice president in charge of North American distribution for the Andre Le Marquand line of Swiss watches, Dallas, Tex. He was formerly executive vice president of Seiko Time.

John Ryan, vice president and general manager of the clock division of Bulova Corp., New York, N.Y., was elected president of the American Clock Manufacturers and Marketing Association. OBITUARIES

Irving P. Abel, 85, of Boca Raton, Fla., died March 5. Abel served as president of Longines-Wittnauer from 1962 to 1970. He joined the company as a sales representative in 1936, became national sales manager in 1950 and was promoted to senior vice president in 1954.

Ronald Jon Bloch, 56, of Westwood, Mass., died March 9 of lung cancer. He was a jewelry designer and owner of Proof of Design jewelry store in Newton, Mass.

Estelle P. Boren, 66, of Corinth, Ky., died March 13 of cancer. She was a retired associate of Cherry Tree Jewelry.

Sara Friedline Dowell, 71, of Edinburg, Tex., died Feb. 2. She was a partner in Dowell’s, a custom jewelry and gem store in Edinburg, a jewelry designer, gem connoisseur and sponsor of gem and jewelry educational events.

Paul Isadore “Is” Dunn, 85, of Sun City, Ariz., a jewelry store owner, died March 13.

Maurice Freeman, 85, of Manhattan, N.Y., died from Parkinson’s disease March 5. He was an authority on antique and modern silver and silverplating. He opened a branch of his father’s London silver business, I. Freeman & Son, in Manhattan in 1929. Originally dealing in Georgian silver and Sheffield plate, the operation also started to manufacture silver and silverplate under Freeman’s direction.

Eldridge Livingston, 85, of Savannah, Tenn., died March 21 of heart disease. He had owned Livingston Jewelry in Savannah.

Evelyn Weaver, 91, of Flagstaff, Ariz., died April 2. She was the former owner of Weaver’s Jewelry Store.
