CRAFT BUSINESS INSTITUTE TO BE HELD IN BALTIMORE
The third annual Craft Business Institute will be held Sept. 20-22 in the Mt. Washington Conference Center, Baltimore, Md. Designed to help craftspeople, students and recent graduates hone their business skills, the conference is designed to arm participants with the tools they need to create successful careers.

WATCHMAKING INSTITUTE TO MARK 50TH YEAR
The National Institute of Watchmaking and Jewelry at the Joseph Bulova School will mark its 50th anniversary July 19 during a dinner at The Plaza in New York, N.Y.
Two objectives of the event are to increase awareness of the institute and to raise money for its programs, says Simon J. Critchell, president and chief executive officer of Cartier and chairman of the dinner.
The school was founded near the end of World War II to provide physically handicapped servicemen with new skills. Today, the emphasis is on anyone with disabilities.
During the dinner, the institute will honor four men for their contributions to the watch and jewelry industries. They are Roland Puton, president and chief executive of Rolex USA; Michael Barlerin, chief executive for the Americas of the World Gold Council; and Robert Bridge and Herb Bridge, cochairmen of Ben Bridge Jewelers in Seattle, Wash.
ASA SCHEDULES APPRAISAL CONFERENCE
The American Society of Appraisers will present its International Appraisal Conference June 16-19 in Toronto, Ontario.
Seminars in the Gems and Jewelry division will be “Due Diligence and Personal Property Appraisals,” “Emeralds: From Mining to Market,” “Estate Appraisal,” “Guidelines for Writing the Problem-Free Insurance Appraisal,” “The Keyless Watch – Pocket to Wrist: a Hundred-Year Review,” “Opal Session,” “Designer Jewelry by Varouj,” “In Enamel Meadows with Filigree Hedges – a Review of Enamel Techniques in Jewelry and Objets Vertu” and “How to Identify Victorian and Edwardian Jewelry Reproductions.”
Other activities include a tour of the Richard Perrin Gem Museum and multidiscipline sessions titled “Due Diligence – Essential Element of Good Appraisal Practice” and “International Developments in Cultural and Intellectual Properties Law.”

REVERE ACADEMY PLANS SUMMER CLASSES
The Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts has announced a series of 46 short, intensive classes for summer.
Featured workshops include “Granulation,” “Chain Making,” “Weaving in Metal,” “Anticlastic Forming,” “Repousse,” “Flatware,” “Advanced Rendering,” “Advanced Wax Modeling,” “Marketing Your Jewelry,” “Hinged Lockets,” “Torch Enameling,” “Detecting Treated Diamonds,” “Platinum Casting” and “Platinum Finishing.”
The classes are intended for working jewelers and serious beginners and hobbyists. Faculty members include Christopher Cart, director of technical training for the Platinum Guild International USA Jewelry; Randy Stromsoe, a master silversmith whose award-winning work sits in the Vatican and the White House; Courtney Balzan, a master gemologist; George D. McLean, whose work is featured in the new book Techniques of Jewelry Illustration by Adolfo Mattiello; Hratch Nargizian, a fifth-generation metalworker; Werner Cronauer and Ed Friedman, master goldsmiths; award-winning designer Joanna Seetoo; and Alan Revere, a master goldsmith, author and founder of the academy.
