Myriam and Tom Tashey, former licensee owners of the European Gem Lab in Los Angeles, now owners of Professional Gem Sciences laboratory in Los Angeles and Chicago, have relinquished the EGL name to headquarters in New York after more than 15 years of use and, with permission from EGL USA, a year earlier than terms of their license agreement.
The Tasheys were charged two years ago with violations of their sublicensing agreement with EGL. According to the court summary, the Tasheys built up their own business, the Gem Quality Institute, Los Angeles and Chicago, trading upon the reputation of EGL. Terms of the court settlement dictated that the Tasheys give up the GQI name (which they did and formed Professional Gem Sciences) and relinquish the EGL Los Angeles name at the expiration of their current license agreement, dated for January 1, 2002, which they have done one year early.
Not wanting the Los Angeles market to be without an EGL laboratory, EGL USA plans to open a new EGL Los Angeles laboratory, headed by New York officials, on April 2, 2001, in the same building location, 550 South Hill St., on the 8th floor.
