The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) has awarded its highest tribute, the Honorary Member Award, to Helen Drutt English for her contribution to the jewelry field as an advocate, gallery owner, curator, collector, author, and teacher.

During the 1960s, English helped spark the resurgence of the American craft movement. In 1973, she opened the Helen Drutt Gallery in Philadelphia, Pa., showcasing artists from both the United States and abroad.

The award was presented by Sharon Church, chair of the Honorary Membership Committee, during the final banquet of SNAG’s annual conference, held this year in Richmond, Va., Feb. 28-March 3. Rather than accept an award for herself, English designed a commemorative pin that was her surprise gift to each banquet attendee.

The Honorary Member Award honors those who have made a significant and lasting contribution to metalsmithing as an art form.
