An estimated $250,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from Saks Fifth Avenue after the department store closed Sunday night, the New York City police said Monday.
Investigators would not disclose the type of jewelry or how many pieces were taken, The New York Times reported.
Employees discovered jewelry missing from a shattered display case when they returned to work Monday morning, the police said, the Times reported. There was no sign of forced entry into the store, at 50th Street and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, and investigators say they believe the thief may have hidden in the store after it closed. A surveillance tape showed a man breaking the glass display case, and investigators were trying to identify him.
