Movado, the upscale Swiss watch brand, has been a principal benefactor of the American Ballet Theatre in New York City since 1986. To celebrate that relationship, ABT in June inaugurated its first annual “Movado Woman of the Year Awards.” The awards luncheon was held at the Metropolitan Opera House amid ABT’s extravagant set for the Romeo and Juliet ballet.

The first award was presented by Caroline Kennedy, ABT’s honorary chairperson, to syndicated columnist Aileen Mehle, known to readers as “Suzy.” Mehle has a long association with ABT: She writes often about it, has chaired several ABT galas over the years, and is a close friend to ABT founders Lucia Chase and Oliver Smith. The second award, presented by ABT principal dancer Vladimir Malakhov, went to Judith Peabody, a longtime supporter of the arts in New York.

Movado paid tribute to the American Ballet Theatre with the new limited-edition Movado ABT Watch. The stainless-steel timepiece features the iconic Movado museum dial on a cuff bracelet in pink or black, laced with ribbons like those on a dancer’s pointe shoes.

The event attracted many ABT supporters, among them Infanta Elena de Borbon, eldest daughter of the king of Spain, and her husband, Jaime de Marichalar, Duke of Lugo; Blaine Trump, sister-in-law of Donald Trump; socialites Cornelia Guest and Muffie Potter Aston; comedian Joan Rivers; and actor Matthew Modine and his wife Cari.
