A new exhibition honoring the Gemological Institute of America’s founder, Robert M. Shipley Sr. (1887-1978), is now on display at the Institute in Carlsbad, Calif. Located on the second floor near the recently installed Shipley lithograph tribute, the exhibit will be on display permanently for visitors to learn about his momentous contributions to the jewelry industry. Items showcased include vintage GIA education course material illustrating the crystallography of diamond—a publication that Shipley glued together and assembled by hand. Two books written by Shipley—Dictionary of Gems and Gemology and FamousDiamonds of the World—and a 1935 photograph of him in his office, round out the exhibit.
