eBay and Amazon—two of the biggest names in the online retailing world—both say they did well with jewelry sales this holiday.
Amazon.com, which sold jewelry for the first time last year, is “thrilled with the customer response to the jewelry and watches store this holiday across all categories, especially fashion jewelry, diamond items, and watches,” says spokeswoman Molly Ingle. “We sold more than one watch per minute during the shopping season and continue to see a very rapid ramp in the watch business in all segments.”
Meanwhile, eBay ranked jewelry and watches as its 10th-highest-grossing category, climbing to $1.7 billion, a 34 percent increase over the $1.26 billion reported for the same period in 2003.
Nielsen Net Ranking said eBay’s jewelry and watches site generated 6.03 million visitors in December, making it the second most highly trafficked site among apparel and beauty sites overall. eBay’s clothing site came in first.
