MARKET IN BRIEF: March 4, 2005 …The color-stone market continues to demonstrate a strong demand in a narrow range of products. Fine and extra-fine unenhanced gem materials are selling well. Prices are strong with little resistance from buyers. Sales of gems in the mid price points that were vital to the strength of the color-stone market in the late 1990s now lag sharply. The lack of sales in the basic bread-and-butter area of the trade indicates that there is still significant caution among buyers. Dealers reported that the mentality at this year’s Tucson show allowed few people to buy color stones for inventory. There were a few exceptions. Pearls are generating serious excitement among buyers. Tahitian and Chinese freshwater-pearl products sold well in Tucson. Tahitian pearls in 8-mm to 9.5-mm sizes are in strong demand and prices continue to increase. Multicolor Tahitian strands are selling well. The market for pink and blue sapphires is also very active. Prices are firming on demand.
