Market in brief:July 1, 2005 … After June’s diamond-price increases, more dealers question if this trend is sustainable. Resistance to higher prices is strong at retail, but prices for high-demand goods are firm. Margins are under assault in other categories. Well-made rounds and princess cuts lead demand. Popular sizes include 1.25 and 3+ cts. in white, VS2 or better, well-made stones. Asscher and cushion cuts are also strong. Pears and ovals are doing well; demand for better-made marquises is improved.
In the colored-stone market, fine-quality unenhanced ruby and sapphire lead demand. Calls for natural padparadscha sapphires jumped dramatically during the second quarter. Prices are moving up but remain attractive compared with their previous high. Extra-fine-quality peridot is selling very well in five to under 10 carat sizes.
