International Colored Gemstone Association ambassador to Madagascar Tom Cushman details another corundum discovery in the country, a ruby find in the Andilamena mining district. Andilamena shaft-mining hit the primary deposit of ruby-star material in late 2003/early 2004. In March 2005, the primary deposit of a form of ruby usually found as “small, dark red, well-formed hexagonal platelets” was also found in Andilamena. According to Cushman, it’s now becoming available. A third corundum deposit, not appraised at press time, was found south of Mahajunga.
