Jewelry store Chicago Diamonds has been sued by the Illinois attorney general for “cybersquatting.”

The lawsuit charges Chicago Diamonds registered several Web addresses that were almost identical to its competitors’, a practice known as “typosquatting.” So, for example, customers looking for Laronjewelers.com who type “Laronjeweler.com” are sent to the Chicago Diamond site.

The suit charges the defendants with violations of the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act and the Illinois Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

The lawsuit seeks a civil penalty of $50,000 and additional penalties of $50,000 for each violation found to have been committed with the intent to defraud, an injunction against any deceptive practices, and for all the domain names to be transferred.

Chicago Diamonds did not respond to a request for comment.
