Market in brief:Sept. 8, 2006 … Exploration efforts are increasing as demand for natural colored gems continues to drive the market. In spite of the slow summer, price increases are being observed in the fine and extra-fine categories. This is most apparent for the fancy varieties of sapphire, tourmaline, garnet, and beryl. Dealers are reporting that buyers in the Far East are bidding up goods in an attempt to meet demand in the growing Asian market. A greater tolerance for heat treatment is being observed as a result of the lack of natural fine-quality material in the market. However, buyers are still shying away from filled and beryllium-diffused stones. The price of South Seas and Tahitian pearls also has risen during the past six months on demand pressure. Prices for fine-quality Tahitian pearls have increased about 15 percent during that period.
