GIA Creates Five New Scholarships

Four new donor-funded scholarships and one new international scholarship have been created for students wishing to attend the Gemological Institute of America. The scholarships are as follows:

* The “R. Harder Gallery of Gems and Minerals Scholarship.” This scholarship is funded by the Community Foundation of the Fox Valley Region in Wisconsin to honor Ron Harder, former CEO of Jewelers Mutual.  This scholarship may be applied to either the On Campus or Distance Education Graduate Gemologist (G.G.) diploma program.  The qualifying applicant must reside in the state of Wisconsin.

* The “Golden Circle Steve Liebman Scholarship” was created by members of The Golden Circle to honor the memory of member Steve Liebman.  This scholarship may be used toward a Distance Education G.G. diploma.

* The “Butterfly of Peace Scholarship” was created by Alan Bronstein through the sales of his book, Forever Brilliant, and can be used towards any On Campus or Distance Education course or program.

* The “Absolute Brilliance Scholarship” is available for students who would like to further their knowledge of diamonds with any On Campus or Distance Education Diamonds course or program.

* The “GIA Endowment Scholarship for GIA Thailand.”  This scholarship is available to Non-U.S. citizens and Non-U.S. residents only for the for the On Campus Graduate Gemologist (G.G.) program at GIA Thailand.

These five scholarships join the recently announced Irving Getz Scholarship.  The Getz scholarship was created by family, friends and colleagues to honor the memory of industry leader Irving Getz.  It may be used for any On Campus or Distance Education course or program or any Lab class.

GIA scholarship applicants only need to submit one application to be considered for all applicable scholarships. Applications for scholarships from prospective students will be accepted through Oct. 15.

Scholarship recipients are generally notified in early December and must accept their scholarship within 30 days of being notified.  Due to the predetermined availability of scholarship funds, some conditions apply and eligibility for scholarships is limited to students who have not received a scholarship within the last five years.
