standing in the teeming, glitzy trading towers in bangkok’s jewelry district, you would be hard-pressed to imagine the industry’s modest beginnings or its current woes. over the past two decades, the industry rose from last to fourth place in importance among thailand’s industry groups. in 1992 alone, for example, jewelry exports grew 28% over the previous year.

roman retirement dinner to aid ja/pratt program jewelers of america will honor director emeritus michael d. roman for his service to the industry at a benefit dinner sunday, feb. 4. the event will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. in tavern on the green, central park west and 67 st., new york city. roman served as executive director of ja for 20 years until his retirement in september.

generosity extends beyond the christmas season for jewelers who give back to the areas that support their stores generosity and charity are alive and well in the jewelry industry. virtually all members of the jck retail jewelers panel said in a recent poll that they actively support charities. their generosity is not a choice, they feel, but a moral obligation and good business.

mjsa appoints new president james f. marquart, a veteran manager of state and national associations, is the new president and chief executive officer of the manufacturing jewelers and silversmiths of america. marquart succeeds matthew runci, who resigned earlier this year to become executive director of jewelers of america.

k.c. jewelry co., a retail store, opened in chattanooga, tenn. ken smith, ron colebrooke and joseph lieberman started the business, which specializes in custom jewelry design and manufacture. king’s jewelry opened its 32nd store. the new store is in the southland mall in marion, ohio. king’s operates six other stores in ohio, 24 in pennsylvania and one in west virginia.

early spring forecast: sherbets, dots and ladies spring fashions previewed at the fashion coterie and the new york premier collections show a continuation of femininity and shape, with more classic suits and dresses reminiscent of ’40s, ’50s and ’60s ladies. most prevalent colors were sherbet shades of orange, lemon-lime, pale lavender, pink and blue.
