In the summer heat, there’s something lovely about wearing things that are not tight and constricting – breezy sundresses and gauzy white garments are perennially popular for practical reasons. This season, the same philosophy may be part of the inspiration for a trendy way to wear wristwatches.
Rather than strapping or clasping the wristwatch so that it fits close to the wrist, this trend has the watch worn loose enough to slide up the arm or to fall over the top portion of the hand.
The cover of the July 2010 issue of Glamour magazine features Jessica Biel photographed wearing a Tag Heuer watch loosely on her wrist to accessorize her DSquared2 one-shouldered top and metallic Versace miniskirt.
The June/July 2010 issue of Harper’s Bazaar includes this photograph from Burberry Prorsum, showing a wristwatch with a buckled strap worn over the top of the model’s hand.
The June 2010 issue of Vogue includes this shot of a model wearing a Tommy Hilfiger bathing suit and wool blazer accessorized with a Pulsar watch worn loosely on the wrist.
You should recognize this dress by Gucci, much loved by magazine editors, the accessorizing of which I discussed in my blog back on March 22. Here it is again in the June 2010 issue of Glamour magazine, accessorized with an oversized wristwatch by Invicta worn loosely on the wrist along with several neon bracelets by Jules Smith and a cuff by Alexis Bittar.
The Fashion News Director for Lucky magazine, in the July 2010 issue, chooses a stainless steel watch by Fossil to accessorize a beachy look inspired by a photograph of Patti Hansen (shown here) and described as “vaguely boyish and quietly provocative.” About the watch she writes: “I’d wear it loose so it’s like jewelry.”
The August 2010 issue of Lucky includes this photo in a style profile of the North American sales director for the Swedish brand Acne, showing her wearing an watch loosely over the animal tattoo on her arm.
The same issue of Lucky styles a model in an H&M tee shirt wearing high up on her arm a gold-plated chronograph watch from Esq by Movado Quest.
The watch itself may be either a woman’s or oversized man’s style, although the length of the watch strap or bracelet will determine whether the watch can be worn in this fashion. Indeed, it is conceivable that some of this oversized look stems purely from the practical use of what is available by photo shoot stylists. When the watch band happens to be much larger than a model’s wrist, voila!
Should you not be a fan of this oversized look, rest assured. The traditional manner of wearing a wristwatch close to the wrist is also very much in style this season, giving every stylish woman options.
