There are TV shows that use jewelry as a storytelling and character development device (Victoria on Masterpiece comes to mind, and also Younger). Homeland is not one of them. Especially in the case of the super serious, perennially clad-in-neutrals Carrie Mathison, the lead role played by award-winning actress Claire Danes.
Which is why it was such a treat to see Danes in bright colors and bold jewels last week at a charity event hosted by Gabriel & Co. and Afghan Hands, a nonprofit organization that teaches Afghan widows skills to help them gain independence, literacy, and livable wages through the creation of hand-embroidered shawls and scarves. Fittingly held on International Women’s Day, the fundraiser gathered industry, press, and celebrities at the New York City jewelry company’s showroom, where attendees could purchase the shawls and a selection of Gabriel & Co. jewelry. All proceeds from the evening benefited the women and their families in Afghanistan.
Danes is a longtime friend of Afghan Hands founder Matin Maulawizada (who also happens to be her makeup artist). Through this connection, Danes’ mother, Carla, a former textile designer, collaborated with the organization on a capsule collection of embroidered scarves. “It was a fantastic conversation between women across seas and continents and many cultural divides,” says Danes, who paired the Shahzia style with a cobalt blue pantsuit by La Perla.

But of course we are most interested in the jewelry she selected for the occasion:
Drop earrings in 14k white gold with diamonds, $1,320; Gabriel & Co.
Wide band in 14k white gold with sapphires and diamonds, $1,845; Gabriel & Co.
“Right now more than ever, women are called to surface and announce themselves as vital and important,” says Danes. I couldn’t agree with her more. But I still might have to steal her ring…
