While some of Hawaii’s volcanoes have produced large cuts of August’s birthstone, peridot, most of the lime green gemstone is mined by hand by Native Americans on Arizona’s San Carlos Reservation or in the mountainous regions of Pakistan. In ancient times, mariners and pirates believed peridot would glow in the dark if it was located near buried treasure.
