Britt’s Pick: Kika Alvarenga’s Tourmaline Coc Earrings

With the passing of October, it’s no longer the month with this birthstone, but all times are tourmaline times.

How could we ever resist? In its rainbow of colors, tourmaline is the perfect fit for any month, season, holiday, or occasion.

Bright pink tourmaline, one might think, is ideal for making a summery splash. And that would be true, except I also think such a luscious color could be just what we need for the current season—to lend an energetic pop to the brown, wine red, forest green, black, and navy blue so adored this time of year (and with daylight saving time recently wreaking havoc on our schedules, we need all the energy we can get).

So yes, Brazilian designer Kika Alvarenga’s unquestionably cheerful and richly hued Coc earrings are seasonless. But the now demands their presence.

Alvarenga creates an arc that builds on each stone’s size and color gradient, marking music with gems that you can practically dance to. The earrings have 13 cts. of tourmaline sourced from the Cruzeiro mine, a storied family-run operation in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. The gemstones are are custom-cut and beautifully set in 18k gold bezels.

These Coc earrings belong to Alvarenga’s Cocar II collection, which takes inspiration from the cocar, a headdress worn by some indigenous tribes of Brazil. “The rhythm and overlay of feathers fascinates me,” Alvarenga says, and she has nestled the tourmalines in slightly overlaid fashion as an homage.

I’ve been dreaming of these earrings from the moment I saw them, in promotions for last summer’s Melee the Show in New York, where Alvarenga showcased the style. A few months later, with the holiday shopping season underway, they’re just as—if not more—unforgettable.
