Gold has heft—that’s one of the things people love most about it—but platinum is heftier: 60% heavier than 14k gold, and 40% heavier than 18k gold, to be specific.
For that reason, the white metal may not seem ideal for earrings. But a raft of chic new designer styles proves that platinum studs and danglers can be at once classy and comfortable.
Take the origami-like Mirage earrings by Macadam. The two-tone 18k yellow gold and platinum pyramid studs were designed to mimic the tapered levels of New York City’s art deco buildings. Or the voluminous interconnected platinum hoops by Katey Walker; at their center hang 9 mm freshwater pearls, luminous and delicate.
Most dramatic of all are the Cymbal earrings from designer Jade Ruzzo’s Percussion range, an ode to the designer’s late father, Vic, a musician. Initially designed in 18k yellow gold, the half-circle shaped discs, grooved like a record, are centered on half-moon diamonds—set in silvery-white platinum, the stones look positively ethereal.
“They’re surprisingly light, given the scale,” Ruzzo tells JCK. “We of course finished them with an omega backing for maximum comfort.
“The earrings are very metal-forward. I felt it would make a bold statement making them in platinum, which I love,” she adds. “Most of my collection is in 18k yellow gold, so when we’re able to incorporate a statement piece in platinum it feels so fresh and unexpected.”
