One of Ana-Katarina Vinkler-Petrovic’s most memorable commissions was from a Somerville, Mass., man looking to woo his British girlfriend. Separated by more than 3,000 miles, the suitor had the Boston-based jewelry designer craft an Art Deco–inspired 18k white gold engagement ring set with ethically mined Canadian diamonds and blue sapphires.

“Sapphires symbolize the ocean that separated the two lovers and the two diamonds indicate the two souls brought together in marriage,” she explains.

Her reaction? She left London, “crossed the Atlantic, and the couple created a new life together here,” adds Vinkler-Petrovic.
