It’s never been in Larkspur & Hawk designer Emily Satloff’s nature to take the road traveled. While drawing obvious historical inspirations in her jewelry designs, her interpretations strike a healthy balance between the old (using a foil-backed jewelry technique popularized in the 18th century) and new (experimenting with never-before-used materials for backing such as lace and woven ribbon). This fall and holiday season is no different as Satloff deepens her exploration of pairing ribbons and unique stone cuts for distinctive combinations of hues and, as a result, an all-new category of jewelry design.
Incorporating ribbons into her jewelry—a technique she introduced just a year ago—has quickly become a signature of the brand. This ribbon-lined approach is a modern innovation, setting her apart in the world of fine jewelry, where such a method is rarely seen. Unlike traditional antique jewelry, which lacks this feature, Satloff’s use of ribbons breathes contemporary life into vintage-inspired pieces, possibly marking the evolution of the foiling technique for which Larkspur & Hawk is renowned.
For her latest pieces, Satloff uses embroidered textiles and ribbons, as well as silk moiré ribbon as her base. “As a jewelry historian and designer, creating this new collection has been very cathartic for me because I get to step into my role as a researcher and use my knowledge of the history of decorative arts to select the ribbons, and it does not end there,” Satloff said in a statement. “While I am not a bench jeweler, I have awarded myself the opportunity to physically have a hand in the collection with the ribbon curation. I map each ribbon, before I personally cut and lay each piece into the settings, readying the jewelry to be set. It’s a bit more tactile for me than some of our other capsules. And I love to do it!”
Ranging from $950 to $5,800, the new pieces will be available this fall through the holiday season.
