Well, that was quick. If you weren’t having a brat summer already, then you probably won’t ever be (unless, of course, you’re not too afraid to be considered totally uncool).
It seems the color-based trend has suffered from an affliction of overexposure, a condition whose only known survivor is one Taylor Swift. It happens when hordes of young people glom onto one particular trend, and then something so unthinkable happens, it becomes persona non grata: The grown-ups get a hold of it.
In this case, our once-beloved brat summer, gone all too soon, became the tool for which one very conspicuous grown-up—the (likely, presumed) Democratic presidential candidate—attempted to connect with young voters. Now, one of two things is going to happen: Everyone and their mother is going to be wearing brat green, or no one is. And this has nothing to do with political affiliation so much as holding dear to that generational divide, where the young do things that make their elders scratch their heads, and if the latter dares to understand it (let alone attempt it), those things become relics of the past.
This development comes on the heels of an article published by yours truly, in which this geriatric millennial dared to dissect this summer’s hottest hue. But, as I said in my previous post, none of the hullabaloo matters—brat green, after all, is basically peridot. And peridot, in our industry and for those who subscribe to it, is forever.
You don’t need more evidence that this one-of-a-kind masterpiece from Brent Neale. While not exactly that sort of putrid-but-pretty green that had everyone raving just a week or so ago, the ring’s center peridot cabochon has a candy-like exterior that looks scrumptious all the way down to its middle. The one-off ring, which comes from the designer’s Capricious Cabochons collection, is decorated with tourmaline cabochons and yellow and green sapphires, displaying a range of green that’s bound to please every palate.
So, to brat or not to brat—I suppose it might all depend on your age…that is not the question. There is no question at all when it comes to peridot and other green-alicious gems, and Brent Neale’s masterful creation could easily be the poster jewel for this undeniable fact.
