If gemstones had superlative contests, one stone would easily take home the award every year for most popular gem of summer.
Perhaps it has something to do with the stone’s robin’s-egg blue hue, or its reputation as a totem of bohemian style, or the way it lends itself to beaded jewels that boast a distinctly warm-weather vibe. If you haven’t guessed the gem yet, we have one final hint: It’s a staple of the year’s most spectacular high jewelry introductions. Turquoise.
Just look to Piaget’s Essence of Extraleganza collection, introduced in June. Turquoise in a Platonic blue shade with all the markings of Sleeping Beauty, the Arizona variety best known for its smooth sky blue appearance, is the centerpiece of some of the collection’s most spectacular and memorable pieces.
Exhibit A, pictured above: a cuff bracelet that recalls a tropical cocktail, complete with removable diamond straw. Made of natural wood, the piece is studded with green tourmalines and diamonds, and capped on one edge by a frothy line of turquoise bubbles that look like they’re about to spill over the rim.
In the spirit of this effervescent new turquoise style, we’d like to toast the cuff and 14 other bewitching turquoise jewels, which appear below. It wouldn’t be summer without them!
