Call us sentimental, but we think the timing was just right for the sale of this heart-shape stone at Sotheby’s New York. The 5 ct. fancy orangy pink diamond went on the block just five days before Valentine’s Day. “It is very unusual to see pink diamonds cut into a heart shape,” says Robin Wright, vice president and specialist in Sotheby’s jewelry department. “Generally, oval and cushion-shape cuts show off the stone’s body color more evidently.” Incidentally, the auction was actually for a necklace: “The mounting was a simple, delicate white gold pendant, suspended by a fine white gold link chain,” says Wright. “When worn as a pendant, the orangy pink color was intensified when it rested against the skin.” The piece was snapped up for  $632,500 (its estimate: $500,000–$700,000), and now sits, we’re guessing, very close to someone’s heart.
