Legendary 35 Carat Beau Sancy Diamond Sells for $9 Million in Record Sotheby’s Auction

The legendary Beau Sancy Diamond—a stone passed down through four royal families—sold for $9 million during Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels sale May 15 in Geneva.

The auction set a new world record of $108,377,219 for a various owner jewelry sale, surpassing the record set by Sotheby’s Geneva in November 2010 of $105 million.

Other highlights include:

  • The Murat Tiara sold for more than $3 million.
  • A 41.40 ct. diamond necklace sold for more than $4 million.
  • An emerald and diamond Bulgari necklace fetched more than $2 million.

“The two days of sales of jewelry at Sotheby’s this week achieved a record total with 94 percent of lots finding buyers and doubling the pre-sale estimate: proof that privately sourced jewels, many with noble provenance are highly sought after,” David Bennett, chairman of Sotheby’s Jewelry department in Europe and the Middle East, said in a statement.
