For Christmas, I bought my girls a kaleidoscope. It was just a little thing, intended to be a stocking stuffer that I assumed wouldn’t amount to much fuss.
In a sea of toys and games, I was surprised to see this unassuming kaleidoscope become a favorite, and not just for the kids—even the grown-ups could’ve passed it around for hours, mesmerized by the galaxy that we seemed to access with a tiny peep.
I still find myself reaching for that kaleidoscope. It has a calming effect, watching the shift of colors and shapes, and the glimmer (our version was mixed with glitter).
The newest collection from Marrow Fine demonstrates an understanding of that trancelike power of the kaleidoscope. Inspired by designer Jillian Sassone’s memory of her grandfather’s kaleidoscope, the collection plays with the shapes and colors one might encounter when peeking through a kaleidoscope lens—a harmony of optical illusions.
Each piece is one-of-a-kind and, true to Marrow’s brand DNA, set with hand-sourced gemstones that display an array of colors and shapes.
“Sourcing the gemstones featured in these designs was a true treasure hunt,” Sassone says in notes on the collection. “From Montana to Sri Lanka, these unique gems were hand-selected from all over the world.”
Each ring displays beautiful features, and many of the rings are stackable—one can just imagine how together they would put on their own kaleidoscopic show. These are pieces that customers would reach for daily, and might even consider for wedding jewelry.
The collection includes both linear bands (with the gems in a line) and a number of chunky gold cigar bands, which bubble with bezel-set cabochon sapphires. Linear drop earrings are a delight, perfect for pairing with an assortment of stud earrings or huggies, or for wearing on their own.
Top: Linear band in 14k yellow gold with 0.51 ct. hexagonal Montana sapphire, 0.28 ct. kite-shape diamond, 0.1 ct. round Montana sapphire, and 0.03 ct. round green sapphire, $4,500; Marrow Fine
