There’s plenty to look forward to among this year’s trends, as detailed by the 2024 Pinterest Predicts report, including the rise of silver and other white metals, dressing like a grandpa, and donning big bows. But one prediction in the report really jumped out at me—jellyfish.
“From home decor to couture to beauty ideas, a whole mood will bubble up in 2024, inspired by your favorite invertebrate: jellyfish. Gen Z and millennials are driving this squishy aesthetic,” it reads.
According to Pinterest, searches for terms such as jellyfish haircut (what is that?!), jellyfish hat, jellyfish umbrella, blue jellyfish, and jellyfish lamp have all shown significant jumps. The statistics paint a very ’90s picture in my head, one of black lights and lava lamps and those inflatable couches, where cute met grunge and everything was a little bit…skeevy.
But the flip side to jellyfish is a soft, pastel one, painted by the jellyfish forest scene of Finding Nemo: bubblegum pink against electric blue, dangerous but seductively beautiful. I can see why jellyfish are so appealing.
Though a peek at Pinterest’s suggestions doesn’t squarely suggest literal jellyfish (there are plenty of pleats, wavy details, bulbous shapes, and softly iridescent items), we can’t help but want to glom on to the hype of these electric creatures, so mysterious and silent, so graceful as they make their way through the water.
This could be interpreted in so many ways—punks and blues; iridescent pearls and opals; freeform, organic creations. I think we can expect to be treated to all manner of these things as the year goes on.
But I want to see some bejeweled jellyfish (who wouldn’t?). And while we’re at it, I’ve gathered some other creatures of the sea, as they would get along swimmingly with any jellyfish-inspired attire. Here is a marine menagerie of jewels.
