It finally happened here in northern Virginia—snow! Beautiful, glistening, heavenly snow. We awoke Monday morning to find it coating the railings, sparkling from the sidewalks, and (just barely) covering the grass that poked out from beneath it as if frozen end-to-end. But it was enough to sled down a hill, so we’ll take it.
Oh, snow—the one weather event that can have you feeling like a kid again. Grown-up you will eventually remember you have a driveway to clear, but still it’s preferable to see a snowfall through the eyes of a child, with wonder and excitement at every bit that comes softly down.
I’d seen Dana Kemp’s earrings well before I knew snow would come to enchant our long weekend, and I recall thinking how perfect they would be—icy and blue, with tiers of chalcedony, topaz, diamonds, and moonstone—to greet snow, if it were to finally happen this season. Elsa from Frozen couldn’t have magicked up a better pair herself.
I love the way the designer used small moonstones here, nestled within a tic-tac-toe of diamond baguettes and blue topaz centerpieces. The layers come together to resemble snowflakes, and those bottom teardrops of chalcedony give the illusion of them gently falling.
These earrings would have been a fine look at Sunday’s Critics Choice Awards, where jewels by Dena Kemp were superbly represented: Never Have I Ever and Fargo star Richa Moorjani wore diamonds by the designer; Oprah Winfrey donned a pair of her amazing amethyst drops. At the next evening’s Emmy Awards, host Anthony Anderson wore a Dena Kemp sapphire and diamond dragonfly brooch on his lapel, and actors Kaitlin Olson and Laverne Cox were among the other stars in jewels by Kemp.
