A big storm was on its way—“the biggest we’ve seen in several years!” they said—and so it was with visions of snowy hills and bundled-up kids that we entered the weekend with anticipation.

It rained. And quite a bit, too. Just yucky, icy winter rain that feels grossly unfair—so cold it makes the house feel damp, chilling you to the bone, but still too warm for magical snow.

As a grown-up and homeowner, I’m aware of the ramifications of a big snow day—shoveling driveways and sidewalks, I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to worry about pipes freezing or something—but the kid in me says, “Bring on the snow!” To build frozen people and sled in the backyard, to marvel at as it comes down in fluffy white drops, a festive sight even after Christmas.

We may not see a white winter in the D.C. area at all, with weather patterns changing and warmer weather pushing north. Or we’ll see it in March, as we prepare to leave for spring break (isn’t that how it always goes?). But with the idea of snow in my head, I’m bound to look for it everywhere. Which is why I immediately zoned in on this cheery pair of earrings from Mindi Mond.
