The Accredited Gemologists Association (AGA) will give its 2023 Antonio C. Bonanno Award for Excellence in Gemology to Jeffrey Post, curator emeritus of gems and minerals and a research associate for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History.
During his 39-year career at the Smithsonian, Post oversaw the expansion of the gems and minerals collection—which now consists of more than 350,000 mineral specimens and 10,000 gems, according to the AGA. He has also published more than 150 scientific articles in mineralogy, gemology, and geochemistry and written two books: The National Gem Collection and the recently published The Smithsonian National Gem Collection—Unearthed: Surprising Stories Behind the Jewels. In August, Post discussed his career on JCK’s podcast, The Jewelry District.
The Bonanno Award recognizes somebody who has made significant contributions to the gemological field. A majority vote of the AGA membership selects the recipient.
The award will be presented at the association’s gala dinner dance on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024, in Tucson, Ariz. Tickets to attend the gala or preceding conference are available here.
