I have to admit that hunting for JCK magazine covers that failed spectacularly is much more fun than finding our most beautiful ones.
As luck would have it, I didn’t have to hunt very hard to find covers that missed the mark during the last half of the 1960s.
Here are 10 of my favorite cover missteps:
July 1965
Yes, JCK’s art director for this cover was 5 years old. This was his masterpiece.
August 1965
Well, at least this cover didn’t feature hot pink…
January 1966
…like this hot mess of an homage to psychedelic mushrooms.
January 1967
This is the hot pink cover you produce if you are trying to get fired.
February 1967
Beware the Technicolor sales, costs, and profits gnomes.
April 1967
The whale in this cover reminded me that Lucky Charms used to have whale-shaped marshmallows back when I was a kid. I remember being really upset when they discontinued them. And that story has as much to do with jewelry as this cover does.
September 1967
Hey look, a rabbit! It’s the perfect distraction for the surrounding murky gold despair.
February 1968
A classic Horse & Hound magazine cover. Oh wait…
January 1969
Nobody classes up a magazine cover like Richard Nixon. Nobody.
August 1969
While Santa is rocking a cool diamond eye-piece, he’s about to get impaled by the ship that carried the Son of Krypton to earth in Superman the Movie.
