“Green is our most highly requested colored stone,” says Rosena Sammi, founder of the Jewelry Edit (TJE), the multi-designer e-boutique that also has a storefront on NYC’s Park Avenue. “Whether emerald, jade, tsavorite, or malachite, green is the pop of color our customers seek, and we see no sign of this slowing down.”
Certainly this is one of the reasons a Jewelry Edit designer collaboration with the Fuli Gemstones Yiqisong Nanshan mine, known for its exquisite peridot, seemed like an idea worth pursuing.
The other reason, explains Sammi, is that the forthcoming capsule embraces social responsibility and diversity, two ideals that TJE and its clients hold dear. “This is what our community expects from us,” she says. “Our project with Fuli allows us to showcase fully traceable stones and demonstrate their journey from the mine to the finished piece. Our customers are eager to factor this feature into their buying decisions, and Fuli peridot allows us to do that.”
The idea for the collaboration came to Sammi during a trip to London where she was introduced to Pia Tonna, director of Fuli Gemstones in the U.K., by a mutual friend. “We bonded over our passion for the environment and our desire to create momentum for more transparency in the industry over how gemstones are mined,” says Sammi.
Fuli has set a goal for the mine, located in the Changbai Mountains of northeastern China, to be a zero-carbon operation—an industry first in colored gemstone mining and the way of the future. “I was inspired by the genuine ambition of Fuli to pioneer a new environmentally sensitive approach to mining,” adds Sammi.
Of course it doesn’t hurt that the “the velvety green color the mine produces is incredibly captivating,” she says And the designers TJE has tapped to participate in the project appear to be in agreement.
Composed of both established and emerging names that represent a cross-section of backgrounds and perspectives, this thoughtfully assembled group includes Pippa Small, Lizzie Mandler, Jennie Kwon, Paige Novick, Lorraine West, Katey Walker, Agaro, Estaa, Lauren Newton, McKenzie Liautaud, and Simone Faurschou.
For Walker, the chance to cherry-pick such exceptional material was a rare treat. She finalized her selection via a virtual meeting with Sammi from the comfort of her Connecticut-based home studio.
“I was amazed at the beautiful dark green color of the peridot stones,” says Walker. “The large pear shape I chose is cut so beautifully, and the green-yellow color is very deep and intense.”
Walker plans to make a choker necklace and is wrapping up work on a ring to showcase the fabulous shape: “The beauty of the cut and color of this large pear-shaped peridot really speaks for itself, so I have decided to do a more minimalistic design to let the stone shine.”
The full Jewelry Edit x Fuli capsule will be shoppable online and at the Park Avenue location starting Oct. 26.
