Synthetic diamonds produced by De Beers subsidiary Element Six were used in the recent discovery of the “God particle” consistent with Higgs boson, the company announced.
High purity CVD-grown synthetic diamond was shown to be the most robust sensor material available that could withstand the harsh, high-radiation environment needed for the experiments, the company said.
“The use of synthetic diamond sensors was essential for a smooth operation of the LHC [Large Hadron Collider] and the collection of high quality data by the LHC experiments, making the observation of the new particle possible,” said professor Wolfgang Lohmann from Germany’s Brandenburg University of Technology in a statement.
“We are incredibly proud of the small, but important, contribution our synthetic diamond has made in [the discovery],” said Adrian Wilson, head of technologies division at Element Six, in a statement. “We congratulate CERN [European Organization for Nuclear Research] and wish them continued success in their fundamental work with the Large Hadron Collider.”
