The Rothschilds are renowned not only for their immense wealth and banking prowess but also for their exceptional contributions to the world of art and cultural heritage as collectors. Over several generations they amassed one of the most extraordinary art collections in history. And now Christie’s is hosting “the first-ever dedicated North American sales of works of art, furniture, and paintings belonging to a branch of one of the great collecting families in history,” per the auction house’s release, called Rothschild Masterpieces.
Among the rare furniture, artworks, and antiquities offered across three sales from Oct. 3 through 17, there will be no shortage of jewels and objets d’art that have stood the test of time. Think an art deco Cartier “Model A” Mystery clock boasting beautiful rock crystal, or a 16th-century Roman cameo portrait with an estimate starting at $200,000, and even a few pocket watches from makers including Breguet and Vacheron Constantin. Below is a closer look at these highlights and more in case you’re hoping to make your own impact on the world of fine arts, in true Rothschild fashion.
