The crochet trend has been quietly making waves in fashion for the past two summers, cropping up on runways, in style figures’ wardrobes, and in stores.
You’ll see the loosely woven style in summer apparel, from the mostly sheer dresses that one might use as a bathing suit cover-up to a swimsuit itself—but heartier options for the coming autumn season are available, too.
For example, I just scored myself a sweet corduroy sweatshirt accented with embroidered crochet squares. It was from a brand I found while deep in a rabbit hole searching for information on Seth Rogen’s wardrobe from his Apple TV+ show Platonic, a statement that may leave many of you scratching your heads—but if you know, you know.
In any case, since that discovery I have been more attuned to (and perhaps appreciative of) the abundance on the market of crochet-detailed clothing, a staple in many ways that has gone mainstream thanks to TikTok-initiated fashion trends like cottagecore and fairycore (and all the other cores—did you know there was a grandmacore?) and the traditional arts and crafts elements in fashion. And as we move forward and continue to borrow from the best of eras past, the crochet crescendo is a nod to the styles of the ’60s and ’70s (some of the best years in fashion, if you ask me).
So when I saw these earrings by mother-daughter brand Monbouquette, it was through crochet-framed glasses that I saw the colorful little squares, much like that corduroy sweatshirt I’ve been waiting to finally don as fall approaches.
“The tangy and vibrant color combination of this specific style reminds us of our travels to various tropical destinations—hence the name Tropix!” the brand’s founders, Jenny and Lily Monbouquette, tell JCK in an email. The pink, green, and teal combination they refer to is a vision of summer, but one well suited for autumn, too.
And here’s what makes these earrings even more special: They’re convertible. And in a way that is clever and easy for the wearer, too. Simply snap the bottom square back, doubling it onto the middle square, to take these earrings from a triple drop to a double. For more length, snap it back (the brand’s website illustrates this well).
“We are always drawn to functional inventiveness in the everyday. The convertibility of these earrings are inspired by a book safe (a book with a hidden compartment inside) that I grew up with in my parents’ library where they would hide money for emergencies. The earring can switch up your look from day to night in a snap by simply pulling on the back of the rectangle to reveal and drop down another bold colored stone with enamel or snap it back together depending on your mood.”
A price point under $500 makes these a fantastic option for holiday shoppers, and there are other colors available, too—I’m partial to the one called Dreamer, an autumn-worthy combination of aubergine and light, pinkish violet.
