India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, gave President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden a 7.5 ct. lab-grown green diamond during his visit to the White House yesterday, according to India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The diamond, created in Surat, India, was placed in a box made using a Kashmiri papier-mâché process known as kar-e-kalamdani.
The ministry’s statement asserted that the diamond was also “green” in the environmental sense, noting that “eco-diversified resources like solar and wind power were used in its making.”
The diamond “symbolizes India’s 75 years of freedom and commitment to sustainable international relations,” said a statement from the prime minister’s office.
