JCK’s readers always have plenty to say about diamonds. And, as it turns out, so do many other people:
1. “It’s hard being a diamond in a rhinestone world.”
- Dolly Parton, from her song “Tennessee Homesick Blues.” The line later became the title of a song from Blood on the Dance Floor.
2. “Goodness, what beautiful diamonds.” “Goodness had nothing to do with it, dearie.”
- Mae West, in the film Night After Night (1932)
3. “I don’t work out. If God wanted us to bend over, He’d put diamonds on the floor.”
4. “It doesn’t look so vulgar now, does it?”
- Elizabeth Taylor to Princess Margaret, after the Princess tried on the Krupp Diamond, which she had labeled “vulgar.” Quoted by Taylor’s biographer William Mann.
5. “I never hated a man enough to give him back his diamonds.”
- Generally attributed to Zsa Zsa Gabor
