Britt’s Pick: Suzanne Kalan’s Engravable Heart

Share

If I had been expected to shop for Valentine’s Day, I’d be in big trouble.

I’ve only just put away the last of the Christmas decorations, unpacked suitcases from a winter vacation, and settled down to look over a Valentine’s Day activity or two for my kids, and—wait, what’s this?!—evidently, it’s today.

Yes, today is Feb. 14, which means any plans I might have thought up for this holiday of love (that is not just for lovers) would have to wait until next year. Still, I’d never pass up the chance to select for myself a very on-theme jewel to covet in honor of today.

This year, that comes in the form of one of Suzanne Kalan’s latest offerings: an engravable heart-shape pendant in gold, enveloped by a border of baguette diamonds.

“I wanted to design a pendant that was not only easy and elegant to wear as an everyday necklace but also affordable as a gifting option,” Kalan says. “The design incorporates my signature style of baguettes with a large enough space of 18k gold to provide the option to engrave.”

Kalan also offers mini dog tag and circle pendants, but the heart wants what it wants…and it wants a heart. The harder decision becomes just precisely what to engrave on its gorgeous gold surface. Initials? A date? A sentimental word? How do people make these decisions?

“It makes the piece completely personable to the wearer and even more special when buying as a gift,” the iconic designer says when I ask what it is about engravable jewelry that consumers love so dearly. “The same piece can be completely unique for the person or event in hand. Aside from Valentine’s Day, the heart pendant is such a great gift for bridesmaids, christenings, bar mitzvahs, births, and birthdays. Largely we have requests for initials and notable dates; however, meaningful words have also been asked for.”
