Pantone’s recent announcement of its 2023 Color of the Year was welcomed in the industry and out with an enthusiasm not seen since its 2018 color reveal: a simultaneously soothing and electric Ultra Violet.
But the vivacious Viva Magenta, Pantone’s “unconventional” choice for the approaching new year, is well suited to the jewelry industry.
Gemstones have met their matches well in the past—Pantone chose Rose Quartz as one of two colors of the year in 2016, Emerald in 2013, and Turquoise in 2010—and while Viva Magenta isn’t named for any specific gem, it evokes plenty.
“We’re lucky that many gorgeous gemstones encapsulate this standout shade, namely spinel and pink tourmaline,” said a statement from Omi Privé, whose spectacular spinel is pictured at top.
Rhodolite garnet is an especially good match, a favorite among gem hounds for its luscious, quenching berry hues—and some rubies are a gorgeous match too.
“I think a good, rich rubellite is absolutely perfect for this year’s Pantone color,” says designer Jen Volkodav.
“As we have seen throughout this year’s fall and winter collections, both down the runways and across the world of fashion, film, jewelry, and design, a prevalent color has been the incorporation of pink,” says designer Dale Novick. “Pink, whether it be a hot pink, a pastel hue, a muted rose, or a sumptuous Pantone magenta, imbues passion.
“Pink has always been favorite color of mine, as reflected, first in my mixed media paintings, and, of course, in the landscape of my brand’s jewelry designs. It is a color to always watch, such as orange is, as they are positive, passionate, and pleasing to the eye, soul, and heart!”
“I am living for Pantone’s 2023 color of the year—so vibrant and full of life!” says Lord Jewelry’s Lena Agdere. “I started reading the comments on Pantone’s Instagram, and it seems like the spectrum of how people feel about this color is so wide. I see that as a great thing, to be honest.”
