The woman who consigned this sapphire and diamond bracelet, which she inherited from her mother, remembers playing with it as a child. “She called it her mother’s blue bracelet,” says Daphne Lingon, a senior vice president in the jewelry department at Christie’s, which auctioned the Paul Flato–designed piece in its Magnificent Jewels sale on Dec. 10 in New York City. “She also remembers her mother purchasing it directly from Flato and wearing it on glamorous evenings out.” The personal story helped pique interest among collectors of the original Hollywood jeweler, says Lingon, catapulting the final purchase price to nearly double its high estimate of $180,000. Lingon also credited a recent increased interest in Flato—along with a rare Flato for Paul Flato signature on the bracelet’s backside—with elevating the final price. “Also, the construction is just beautiful,” she adds. “The stones had to be cut to specific measurements and matched for color and clarity. A lot of work and thought went into this one.”
