The Hong Kong Trade Development Council—the international marketing arm for Hong Kong–based traders, manufacturers, and service providers (and the organizer of the Hong Kong International Jewellery show)—recently announced plans for U.S. symposiums, “Think Asia, Think Hong Kong,” in New York City and Los Angeles on June 11 and 14, respectively.
The events—which HKTDC calls the largest ever Hong Kong–specific U.S. promotions—aim to expose opportunities for American companies looking for business opportunities in Asia, particularly on the Chinese mainland. Part of the appeal of doing business in Asia includes low taxes, and of course, lower payment rate to employees.
Speakers include executives from around the globe, as well as CY Leung, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.
Sessions will highlight Hong Kong-specific advantages for U.S. companies; how enterprises from the Chinese mainland have been expanding their international presence in Hong Kong; and which mainland companies are seeking global partners. Additional education includes tips on selling consumer brands to mainland China; insight into available technology partnerships; finance-related topics; and networking opportunities in the lifestyle and fashion categories.
According to the HKTDC, U.S. exports to Hong Kong grew 41 percent from 2010 to 2012 and were valued at more than $37 billion. In the past decade, U.S. exports to Hong Kong skyrocketed 177 percent.
