It wasn’t an April Fools joke, though Macy’s might wish that it was.
In a reminder of the value of a good proofreader, a Macy’s catalog last week inadvertently offered customers the deal of a lifetime—a $1,500 diamond-accented cable necklace in sterling silver and gold, marked down to the low, low price of $47. That’s an almost 97 percent discount.
Unfortunately, the necklace was supposed to be priced at $479. A copy of the catalog page with the erroneous price can be seen here.
The store did sell some pieces at the heavily discounted price, according to local TV news station WFAA. When one man tried to buy the necklace, however, he was told someone had already purchased the entire stock. The store did offer to ship two to his house, and the man paid the $47 price—and received a receipt saying his total savings was $1,400. He was later told the order had been cancelled.
Macy’s did not return a request for comment from JCK. But a spokeswoman told the TV station: “When the mistake was caught, signage did go up in the fine jewelry department and on store doors alerting customers that a mistake had been made. For those customers who bought the necklace at the $47 price, they were fortunate.”
The company did not say how many $47 necklaces it sold.
