Forecasters are divided on the outlook for Mother’s Day jewelry sales—with one predicting they will be flat, and another saying they will rise considerably.
The more upbeat forecast, from the National Retail Federation, found that more than one third (34.4 percent) of the gift givers it surveyed will buy jewelry this year, spending a total of $4.2 billion, up from $3.7 billion last year.
Overall Mother’s Day spending will increase 11 percent, to $20.7 billion, the organization said.
However, IBISworld, another research firm, foresees zero growth in Mother’s Day jewelry sales. The firm estimates that sales will hit $2.9 billion, the same as last year. Flowers and gift certificates are predicted to see bigger jumps, rising 3.9 and 2.2 percent, respectively. Overall Mother’s Day sales will rise 0.2 percent, the firm said.
