If yellow diamonds are the sunniest of all gems, the jumbo rocks in the center of these spectacular earrings—weighing 18.13 and 17.26 cts., respectively—might actually increase vitamin D levels in their wearer.
The dazzling clips, which sold for more than $1.2 million at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite auction in Hong Kong on April 8, are set with fancy intense yellow diamonds inside a frame of brilliant-cut pink diamonds mounted in platinum and 18k pink gold.
Though the earrings were fabricated in the past five years by an unknown jeweler, “the workmanship is very fine, comparable to any branded jewelry,” says Terry Chu, deputy head of jewelry for Sotheby’s Asia. Of course, the heft of the canary stones alone made them covetable. The diamonds “are impressive sizes—well over 15 carats—their color is outstanding, and they’re matching, [which is] very rare in the market,” says Chu. Pieces featuring a simple, uncluttered configuration typically do well at auction, adds Chu, because “high-quality diamonds don’t need complicated design.”
