Share

It’s jewelry week in New York City. After being canceled in 2021 due to the pandemic, and then postponed from their mid-January dates due to the omicron surge, the constellation of events that take place around the annual Gem Awards and 24 Karat banquet in Manhattan are finally happening. Better late than never!

VicenzaOro, the grand dame of European jewelry fairs, is back. The continent’s largest gold and jewelry trade show, Vicenza is so much more than simply a place to stock up on the latest trends. For buyers, the show’s programming is almost as important as its products. Sustainability, technological evolution, Gen Z buying trends, and the gold market will be the hot topics on this year’s Main Stage. Buyers interested in technology shouldn’t miss T.GOLD, the jewelry machinery exhibition held in parallel with VicenzaOro, one of multiple events happening under the Italian Exhibition Group banner.

Monday, NYC Jewelry Week cofounder Bella Neyman begins a five-part course that explores studio jewelry as it developed post–World War II across the United States and later on in Europe. Every Monday through April 11, “Studio Jewelry: From Mid-Century Pioneers to Contemporary Jewelry Masters” will look at how jewelers with a lack of formal metals education—including Alexander Calder, Art Smith, Margaret De Patta, Wendy Ramshaw, Andrew Grima, Bruno Martinazzi, Joyce J. Scott, and Lola Brooks—developed their voice, created a wearable art form, and led a movement for change that continues to this day. ($395)

L’École, School of Jewelry Arts Presentation on Colored Diamonds: March 17, 1 p.m. ET (online)

The L’École, School of Jewelry Arts in Paris, supported by Van Cleef & Arpels, examines the world of natural colored diamonds. What is at the origin of their color (in particular, blue and pink diamonds, the two most popular)? Can it be measured, quantified, and appraised? Is rarity the only aspect to explain the passion they evoke? This online conversation, will be broadcast live from L’École, School of Jewelry Arts in Paris, but don’t worry if your French is rusty (or nonexistent)—instruction will be provided in English.
