As one of the largest and most renowned auction houses in the world, Bonhams has a knack for sourcing important stones, especially sapphires and diamonds. Last year alone, Bonhams New York had major sales: A 43.83 ct. unheated sapphire and diamond ring by Bulgari sold for $570,000, an 8.21 ct. belle epoque diamond ring went for $500,000, and a 2.02 ct. fancy orangey-pink diamond sold for $400,000. Starting Thursday and running through March 8, Bonhams is hosting Only Diamonds Online.
This sale, however, is unlike any others that came before it for the auctioneer. With more than 240 round white diamond pieces hitting the auction block, Only Diamonds Online features an astonishing number of pieces from a single West Coast collection that clients can use to create their own bespoke pieces. All of the diamonds are GIA certified as well as engraved and weigh between 1 and 5 carats. A perfect example of the offering is a 5.71 ct. brilliant-cut, unmounted, GIA-certified diamond estimated to go for between $60,000 and $100,000.
“This is the first sale of its kind, presenting a collection of round brilliant white diamonds from a single owner as individual lots,” said Bonhams New York director and head of jewelry Caroline Morrissey. “It allows buyers the chance to assemble a set of matched stones to realize any design they would want to make with these vintage gems, be it a single classic diamond ring, a series of tennis bracelets, or a graduated rivière necklace. It is not always easy to make a good match for multiple stones required for a design, and this is an unusual opportunity to have an actual treasure trove of similar stones at your fingertips. This is a vault of stones that has been closed for 50 years and is open and available for purchase for a blink of the eye.”
